How our Little Tokyo Wireless Network is Helping a Family
They featured a great story about Rosie Quintero and her family who live in Casa Heiwa, and how our Little Tokyo Unplugged community Wi-Fi network has changed their lives.
The family’s one laptop rarely leaves the kitchen table in their small apartment, where 14-year-old Christian does his homework, 11-year-old Erica plays online games, and mom Rosy stays connected to family and friends abroad. It’s not an overstatement to say that broadband has changed the Quinteros’ world. With almost every aspect of life demanding a high-speed connection, the family is finally able to fully participate.They also put together a video of her story.

Presidential Inauguration Viewing in Little Tokyo
The Japanese American National Museum will host a public viewing of the Presidential Inauguration live at the National Center For the Preservation of Democracy. Friends, family, strangers, and anyone and everyone in Little Tokyo and downtown LA. are welcomed. Share this historic moment with others in the Little Tokyo community!

Ready for Some Serious Pummeling?
The 2009 U.S. Weight Category Karate Championships are coming to Little Tokyo on Sunday, Jan 25th at the Aratani Japan America Theater.
Kyokushin is a type of full contact karate developed by Mas Oyama in the mid-1960’s that calls for no or minimal padding, and is also known as “knockdown karate”…you can pretty much guess the object of the matches.
Check out this YouTube video, the kicks can come out of *nowhere*.
Now can you imagine the sort of excitement and activity this event would generate in Little Tokyo year-round?
SPITZ Grand Opening: Jan 15
SPITZ Downtown in Little Tokyo is having a grand opening event celebrating the opening of the second location, which is on the first floor of the Hikari building. They've actually been open for several months already, so this event is more of a formal kick-off.
The Turkish kebab restaurant has fast become one of our LTSC office favorites. Affordable and tasty, the sweet potato fries go great with their popular chicken Döner wraps (about $10). Nice sidewalk dining too, if the restaurant's interior's too dark for you.
They're going to feature $2 beers and glasses of sangria, and 50% off all menu items on January 15th, 2009 from 7pm to midnight

Help us find high school participants! JACL Bridging Communities Program
The Japanese American Citizens League Pacific Southwest District (JACL PSW) and Nikkei for Civil Rights & Redress (NCRR) in partnership with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Islamic Shura Council announce the launch of the Bridging Communities program to connect the youth of the Japanese American community to the Muslim American community by celebrating the strengths and differences that bind us as a community.WHAT: Through a series of interactive sessions, 40 high school students will engage in workshops with discussions and group activities as well as visit sites that will allow the participants to fully engage and learn about the Muslim and Japanese cultures. These sessions will focus on topics ranging from ethnic identity, culture/religion, civil rights, and activism.
WHY: Since 9/11 and the start of the Iraq War, Muslim communities throughout the nation have experienced heightened hostility, discrimination, and policies that work against them simply because of their ethnic identity. JACL and NCRR recognize the hostilities and civil rights infringements on Muslim communities as those that were similarly forced upon Japanese Americans during WWII. The joint effort of both communities will heighten awareness through education to the youth.
WHERE: Sites include the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center, Little Tokyo, a mosque in Orange County, and Manzanar.
WHEN: Four Saturday Sessions in Spring 2009: 2/21/09, 3/14/09, 4/4/09, 4/25/09
